Here’s to the stable ones: In praise of Tim Cook

Here’s to the stable ones: In praise of Tim Cook

Tim Cook’s tenure as Apple CEO ends September 1 when he takes the role of executive chair. He will be replaced by John Ternus, a 25-year Apple veteran and head of its hardware engineering division. I get the sense Cook’s professional obituaries will focus on his steady hand, execution success and lack of intra-company drama. All of those are virtues but I suspect the media, ever in love with a narrative of its own concoction, will use them as cudgels. Consider this an attempt to balance the reco...

How many pampered hikers can you freeze in alpine tycoon game Above the Snow?

How many pampered hikers can you freeze in alpine tycoon game Above the Snow?

I recently spent time in a mountain youth hostel, which offered a choice of hikes up nearby peaks together with the regulation climber's breakfast of imploded sausage plus violently oversugared orange juice. The worst thing that happened to me there was that I bunked next to an older German man who talked in his sleep. He sounded pretty distressed about something, possibly the sausages. I'll be inflicting far worse on my guests in Above the Snow, a tycoon management game in which you build, deco...

iPhone 18 Pro's Special Color Rumored Yet Again

Last week, Macworld's Filipe Espósito reported that Apple is testing four color options for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and one of those colors has since been corroborated by a known leaker on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. The Expanse: Osiris Reborn plays like a Mass Effect-like sci-fi adventure in fine form, but its developer's use of AI raises some difficult questions

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn caused a commotion when it was announced. That's in part because it looked like a modern Mass Effect, which always tends to be taken as a good thing, and because it's an adaptation of a well-known and well-liked science-fiction property in The Expanse. What's more, it comes from a studio with role-playing pedigree, Owlcat Games, the creator of the Pathfinder CRPGs and, more recently, Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, a delightfully crunchy and dense CRPG.
