Nintendo low-balls its Switch 2 sales estimates, but they’re still huge

Polygon icon 331 days, 9 hours, 50 minutes ago by Oli Welsh

Nintendo is predicting that it will sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles in its current financial year — a figure that most analysts agree is too low, but that would still put it among the fastest-selling game consoles of all time. Nintendo made the forecast in a report to investors covering its previous financial year,...

Paradox apologizes for "disappointing" Stellaris 4.0 update, commits to fixes

Naming the Stellaris 4.0 update ‘Phoenix’ was supposed to be a nod to the nine-year-old 4X space game’s rebirth from the ashes. Landing alongside the Biogenesis DLC, the patch promised to give the strategy game new life courtesy of major, sweeping system overhauls from developer Paradox. Yet it’s become a more of a literal descriptor than expected, as game director Stephen ‘Eladrin’ Muray admits that 4.0 arrived “a little bit on fire.” In a new developer blog, Muray apologizes for disappointing ...

Death Stranding 2 is as much a rebuttal of Death Stranding's theme of connection as a sequel

Earlier today there was a mighty eruption of Death Stranding 2: On The Beach previews, featuring commentary on the new game's themes and social relevance from erstwhile Metal Gear Solidifier and Kojima Productions boss Hideo Kojima. Themes and social relevance, eh! Kojima is one of the few bigwigs who will engage openly with such things, which is perhaps less praise of Kojima than a judgement upon the hesitant and anodyne way other blockbuster game creators discuss the impact of their work. In t...

Alienware just launched a new line of more affordable laptops

Alienware just dropped a pair of new laptops under its Aurora brand. They are relatively budget-friendly and look like an excellent alternative to the pricier Area 51 line. These are the first Aurora laptops the company has released in nearly two decades, as the brand has primarily been reserved for desktops. There’s the Alienware 16 Aurora and the 16X Aurora. The base 16 laptop starts at just $1,150, which is a good price for a dedicated gaming laptop. The entry-level specs include an Intel 5 C...

A rabbit would like you to kill people in grimy, repellent FPS Pigface

Doom: The Dark Ages releases next week, and with it the realisation that Doom Guy has come a long way since the murder of his beloved rabbit Daisy at the hands of hell. While FPS Pigface is naturally a genre descendant of Doom, I cannot say for certain if the evil rabbit that commands you to go do sledgehammer murder in its Itch.io combat demo is a descendant of Daisy. Either way, it's an ominous critter. "You know what you did to deserve this," says the rabbit. A free sledgehammer? Thanks rabbi...

Apple files emergency hold to challenge App Store payment injunction

Apple has filed an emergency motion, asking a federal appeals court to put a pause on orders that would significantly change how the App Store works. Those changes, the company argued in its motion, will cost the company "substantial sums annually" and are based on conduct that hasn't been "adjudicated to be (and is not) unlawful." It said those orders were made to punish Apple for "purported non-compliance" to previous orders.   If you'll recall, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers recently ruled that...

The Hundred Line's Script Is Long Enough To Print 60 Paperback Novels

According to its director, at least. The Hundred Line - Last Defense Academy is out now on Nintendo Switch and, by all accounts, it stands as one of the best games from directors Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi. It's a pretty hefty title, too, boasting 100 unique endings with more narrative twists and turns than your average George R. R. Martin book. As such, a recent Denfaminicogamer interview (thanks, Automaton) with Kodaka and voice actors Taihi Kimura (Takumi Sumino) and Tomoyo Kurosawa...

Nintendo thinks it'll sell 15m Switch 2s in its first fiscal year

Nintendo is throwing some cold water on Switch 2 sales estimates even though launch demand seems to be off the charts. In its latest earnings report, the company projected sales of 15 million Switch 2 units in its first year on sale to March 2026, fewer than analyst predictions of 16.8 million. It didn't explain the number but it's likely due to uncertainty around US tariffs and the fact that Nintendo is usually cautious with its forecasts.  Switch 2 sales opened with a bang as resellers immedia...

Elden Ring: Nightreign has a solution to stale strategies, says director

"Attacking is the most consistent element of Elden Ring Nightreign’s gameplay," says director Junya Ishizaki in a new PlayStation blog, explaining the choice to have players revive each other by hitting wounded mates with swords - a famously crucial tenet of the hippocratic oath. "We tested to see if it would work for resuscitation, and we discovered a wide variety of tactics depending on range, frequency, and probability, so we formally implemented it. We also found it quite amusing (laughs)."

New RTS Fractured Alliance captures the soul of Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun

While I like the comparative groundedness of Tiberian Dawn, Command and Conquer 2 could be the best-looking game in the entire Westwood series. The bright, bold colors. The laser weapons. The mechs. Red Alert 2 also leaps off the screen, but Tiberian Sun finds this gorgeous middle ground between grim post-apocalyptica and C&C’s trademark high sci-fi. It’s a good time for RTS games right now. Tempest Rising is a worthy successor to the genre’s greatest classics and Age of Empires 2 just got a new...
