Last year, Spanish developers Tequila Works cancelled a game, laid off staff, and finally filed for insolvency in the face of "prolonged market conditions", after losing funding from Tencent. Founders Raúl Rubio and Luz Sancho departed the studio in the process. Now, what's left of Tequila are selling off all their assets in an open auction, including both published games like horror platformer Deadlight, and a number of projects that were either in development or "ready for production". It all ...

Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us - you can keep ‘em. For me, videogame aesthetics peaked in the ‘90s; instead of photorealism and verisimilitude, games had a visual style that was completely their own. I’m thinking of Wolfenstein 3D, the original Half-Life, and Rise of the Triad; games that looked like games. Originally released in 1993 by Duke Nukem and RoTT maker Apogee, Biomenace leapt off the screen. A monster-blasting adventure starring CIA agent Snake Logan (now, that’...

Microsoft is gradually rolling out new preview features to Windows Insiders, including Recall, which has been the target of critics' security and privacy concerns since it was announced. It was originally supposed to be a preview experience that's broadly available to all Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs when the first batch of AI-assisted devices hit the market in June last year. But Microsoft pushed back its release to ensure the feature was truly secure. It delayed the tool's rollout yet again in Octo...

In 2014, Magic: The Gathering had an irrefutable hit on its hands. Khans of Tarkir, the card game’s 65th expansion, introduced players to a realm at war, as five distinct clans fought for power and glory. In less than a year, one time traveler’s cosmic intervention completely reshaped the world of Tarkir, and canonically erased...

Chingle bells. With the Pokémon Trading Card Game being at the height of popularity right now, you'd think that most Pocket Monsters regularly get new cards. Well, that's not been the case for a certain baby Pokémon first introduced in Pokémon Diamond & Pearl. But that's about to change in the next expansion, coming later this month (thanks VGC) Chingling, the baby form of Chimecho, hasn't featured on a Pokémon card a since 2009. In fact, since its debut in 2007, it's only ever featured on three...

Back in the 90s, there were essentially two kinds of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 player. Firstly, the juvenile Mussolinis who monopolised the Blue Blur himself in the callously-defined "single player" mode, and secondly, the absolute saints and/or craven appeasers who consented to be Sonic's sidekick Tails, and had to spend the whole run struggling to keep pace with the Sonic player's camera.

As it said it would do earlier this year, Google has laid off hundreds of employees from its Platforms and Devices division, The Information reported. That part of the company, which employs over 25,000 people, houses its Pixel phones and smartwatches, Nest devices, the Android and ChromeOS platforms and Chrome browser. In January, Google offered buyouts to let them leave as part of a "voluntary exit plan." "Since combining the platforms and devices teams last year, we've focused on becoming mo...

It doesn’t feel quite right to call Warfare a war movie. At least not in the traditional sense. War movies generally have arcs and scope; they search for meaning in the violence. Warfare’s aims are more direct. According to co-directors Alex Garland (Civil War, Annihilation, Ex Machina) and ex-Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza, the goal of...

Tesla has started selling its much-awaited RWD Cybertruck but it'll cost a cool $10K more than originally promised and be missing some key figures from the AWD version. However, the $69,990 Long Range model will have 350 miles of range, 100 more than Tesla stated when it first unveiled the polarizing pickup EV. The new model arrives with Tesla reportedly facing anemic Cybertruck sales and a recent backlash against the automaker and its CEO Elon Musk. The Long Range Cybertruck is now the cheapes...

It's no secret that I have a somewhat unhealthy obsession with vampires. From Vampire: The Masquerade to traditional Hammer horror, for some bizarre reason I just love those little bloodsucking guys. Back when I first started in this industry, I made V Rising one of my pet projects, writing so many base-related guides that they felt like they were coming out of my ears. It's a game I've always kept a close eye on, even when I'm not playing it, and with V Rising Invaders of Oakveil just around th...

Google is back with another entry-level smartphone, the Pixel 9a. With more AI smarts, a new hardware design, and the biggest battery on any Pixel yet, on paper, it sounds good. Especially the sub-$500 price tag. In our full Pixel 9a review, Sam Rutherford breaks down where corners have been cut compared to the rest of the Pixel 9 family, namely screen (which is still nice!) and sluggish charging. While there is support for nearly all of Google’s AI features, the $499 Pixel 9a doesn’t get access...

Apple's current struggles with Apple Intelligence and Siri began in early 2023 when AI head John Giannandrea sought approval from CEO Tim Cook to purchase more AI chips for development, according to a new report from The New York Times. Cook initially approved doubling the team's chip budget, but CFO Luca Maestri reportedly reduced the increase to less than half that amount, and instead encouraged the team to make existing chips more efficient. The lack of adequate GPU resources meant Apple's AI...
