As the Masters Tournament begins, remember that hobbits invented golf

Polygon icon 130 days, 14 hours, 49 minutes ago by Susana Polo

The Masters Tournament, the emerald jewel in the crown of professional golf, begins this week. That’s a statement I’m reasonably confident about, but not totally, because I know almost nothing about professional golf. But not completely nothing. I know that in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, it was invented by hobbits.  Oh, you may be thinking, is...

X4: Foundations, the space sim that lets you take an empire to war, will let you just talk things out in its next update

There's a whole bunch of games set in space that let you duke it out in dogfights, form strategies around entire fleets, terraform planets, all often pretty violent acts. So, I found it very funny to see X4: Foundations at the Triple-I showcase today, which received a trailer for its upcoming Diplomacy update which is literally about just talking things out. Seriously, when it says that it's introducing diplomacy it means it, as when it arrives you'll be able to send diplomats to negotiate and f...

Razer's PC Remote Play app is now available

On the heels of Razer pausing direct laptop sales in the US (thanks to those on-again, off-again, yet still very much on for China tariffs), the company has officially launched its remote game streaming app. Razer PC Remote Play, which the company rolled out in beta at CES 2025, is now officially available for iOS and Android. Razer may be a bit late to the party here, and its app is hardly the only way to stream your PC games to other devices. (For example, Steam's version has offered similar f...

Nintendo may sell the Switch 2 at a loss in the US due to tariffs

The Nintendo Switch 2 is functionally similar to its predecessor. Sure, the detachable controllers can now each be used as a mouse (on your pants, no less), the screen is bigger, the hardware is more powerful and there's a built-in mic for voice chat. But otherwise the company isn't rocking the boat too much. At least not outside of its business model, as it may be preparing to sell the console at a loss. For most countries, President Donald Trump has paused the harshest tariffs that he announce...

FakeFish, the devs behind the cosmic/ survival horror co-op game Barotrauma, have just revealed their next game at the Triple-i showcase, Frostrail. It's another cosmic horror co-op game, albeit with an incredibly different vibe. Where Barotrauma has you trundling through a submarine, Frostrail opens things up a bit, putting you in an icy, apocalyptic looking setting where you have your own train to get you from place to place.

Vampire Survivors' latest crossover is with, uh, Square Enix's SaGa series as part of a free update

Vampire Survivors has had a few crossovers in its time since releasing in 2022, like with Among Us, Contra of all series, and the one that felt like an inevitability, Castlevania. The game's latest collab was just announced at this year's Triple-I showcase, and personally it's a bit of a head scratcher: Square Enix's SaGa series. Referred to as the Emerald Diorama update, specifically because of the most recent entry in the series Emerald Beyond, it was introduced with another lovely animated se...

It is time to go to the Arctic and decide which of you is the dog

Announced just now at the Triple-I Initiative, Ikuma - The Frozen Compass is a wintry 3D action adventure in which a tenacious young buck and his dog get stranded on an Arctic island. The key thing to know is that it's a co-op game, a co-op splitscreen game, if you please, which means that you and your friends must decide, right now, which of you will play the dog. This game is described as "a powerful story of love, loss, and endurance", which doesn't bode brilliantly for the dog, so whoever do...

The Alters launch date is very soon, as Frostpunk 2 dev preps new survival game

The Alters is a big tonal swerve for 11 bit. This War of Mine is about as grave as survival games get, following the arduous day-in, day-out of civilians trying to stay alive during the siege of Sarajevo. Frostpunk and its sequel are that much more fantastical, but still grounded in a kind of gruelling minutiae - Frostpunk 2 especially is all about grinding out small victories with little resources. But now The Alters launch date has been confirmed, and the super-stylized, could-be rival to hits...

Existentially terrifying clone management meets survival game The Alters gets a June release date

If I was ever offered the opportunity to clone myself, I'd quite quickly say "no thank you, there's one too many of me in this world already." However, in The Alters, the needs must, as it sees its protagonist needing to create clones of himself (the titular "Alters") so that he can escape a hostile planet he's crash-landed on. It's a little bit crafty, a little bit management gamey, and as revealed during its latest trailer during the Triple-I showcase, it now has a release date of June 13th, 2...

Famed fantasy 4X sequel Endless Legend 2 is finally close, a decade later

Even a decade after it launched, the original Endless Legend is one of the best 4X games around. Developer Amplitude Studios didn’t just craft a truly special fantasy and sci-fi universe, it also put on a masterclass in strategy design. While the influences of Age of Wonders and Civilization are clear, the colorful factions and their individual territories put a unique twist on the genre. Now, Endless Legend 2 is closer than ever, as we finally have an imminent launch window.

Slocap’s next game Rematch will be available on June 19. It’ll cost $30 and will be playable on PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. The announcement was made at the The Triple-i Initiative indie showcase. Rematch is a soccer title, which may seem surprising for the company that made the brawlers Sifu and Absolver. However, it looks to be an arcade-focused affair instead of a serious sim. There are both 5v5 and 4v4 matches and the action looks fast-paced. There are no fouls, offsides or anything like th...

Today in 'game pitches that would keep you reading a novel if they were the first line' is Neverway, a horror RPG with life sim bits from Coldblood Inc. Burnt out from years working a dead-end job, Fiona (and I'll quote this directly because it's the blasé single sentence that did it for me) "starts over on a farm and becomes the immortal herald of a dead god". Lovely stuff. Cucumbers. Carrots. Cthulhu. City slickers will say it's fake, but we've seen the punchline to this whole cosmic joke, squ...

Void/Breaker hands you a hyper-moddable gun and tells you to massacre some architecture

I was all primed to ignore Void/Breaker forever based on it being pitched to me as a roguelite FPS in which you "escape an endless cycle" and "craft infinite weapon variants" in order to "forge deadly synergies". I joke, I joke. There is, of course, no way of ignoring the roguelike and/or roguelite genre in this, the year 2025. We are all caught in the endless cycle of roguelike or roguelite releases, doomed to forge synergy after synergy until whatever software our universe is secretly running ...
