The Death Stranding movie now has a writer and director

Movies based on video games have become a pretty big deal in recent years. Just look at those box office returns for A Minecraft Movie for proof of that. This means that more films are coming down the pike, including a motion picture based on Hideo Kojima’s delivery simulator Death Stranding. We first learned this was coming back in 2022, but now there’s a writer and director attached to the project. The production company A24, which is helping to finance the film, just announced that it will be...

Switch 2 Allows Players To Create Per-Game Controller Profiles

That's GR-eat! One of the more interesting new additions to the Switch 2 comes in the form of the 'GL' and 'GR' buttons, which can now be found on the rear of both the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller and on the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip. These two new buttons, besides allowing you more freedom in how you set up your controls in-game, also let you do things like program the console's screenshot function so you can catch those all-important action shots more easily. Which is very cool.

Monster Hunter Wilds and Split Fiction beaten by 2025’s new highest-rated game

2025 is already looking like a stellar year for videogames. So far we’ve had Monster Hunter Wilds, Split Fiction, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Then, throughout the rest of the year, we have Elden Ring Nightreign, and at some point GTA 6. We’ve already had some big successes, too, but now one unassuming puzzle experience has dethroned them all. Blue Prince is suddenly the highest-rated game of the year, and you need to hear about it.

Wield hag magic against glitchy pixel dungeons in this glorious migraine of a platformer

In these days of combing online imagery for symptoms of genAI “hallucination”, it’s easy to forget that once upon a time, mutant video game visuals were beautiful. There's a whole genre of art dedicated to them. Here to remind us is Babushka's Glitch Dungeon Crystal, a gorgeously scruffy 2D platformer in which an old lady explores a big magic cellar, hitting graphics card malfunctions with a broom. Think Animal Well, but both you and the simulation aren’t as young as you used to be.

Switch 2: the tech specs that Nintendo and Nvidia are not sharing

Nintendo has rarely been forthcoming about the technical specifications of its consoles, giving only the minimum of details and - quite rightly, some might say - focusing on the games themselves. It makes sense, bearing in mind that the firm exited the console specs arms race with the Wii back in 2006. The pattern continues with Switch 2 and its core processor with only the Nvidia partnership confirmed and by extension, the fact that the new machine has both machine learning capabilities (hello,...

Nintendo says the Switch 2 Joy-Con controllers don't have Hall effect thumbsticks

While the Nintendo Switch 2 had its splashy debut last week, including details about the hardware and launch games, there's still lots about the console that Nintendo has yet to clear up. For instance, the company hasn't gone into specifics about the CPU and GPU that are powering the Switch 2, other than to touch on the performance enhancements that they offer over the Switch (NVIDIA separately confirmed that the Switch 2 uses its Deep Learning Super Sampling tech). However, since last Wednesday...

I strongly feel this AI-powered demo of Quake 2 is an insult to life itself

Microsoft have developed a playable version of Quake 2 that runs on generative AI. The "game" cannot currently run for longer than two minutes, has a very low frame rate, unresponsive controls, and is full of blurry textures. But Microsoft's artificial intelligensia are proud enough of the prototype that they have made it playable online. Would you like to experience a novel type of anguish? Come with me.

Even Realities G1 review: Limited but effective smart glasses

I appreciate devices that don’t try to do too much. There are too many products throwing too many features at the consumer in the hope one or two sticks. I’m reminded of the recently revived Pebble, which offers a pared down way to check your phone’s notifications from your wrist, and little else. That’s the best way to describe Even Realities’ G1 smart glasses, which puts a second screen for your smartphone on your face. G1 is almost aggressively low-tech, putting in your line of sight a dot ma...

Nintendo Comments On Mario Kart World's Controversial Price

"Whenever we look at a given game, we just look at what is the experience". One of the hot talking points of the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal last week was the price of games. And the big launch title, Mario Kart World, has been at the centre of that storm. The first brand new Mario Kart in a decade will be launching at a RRP of $80 in the United States, $10 more than Nintendo's current most-expensive first-party game, Tears of the Kingdom. And consumers have directed a lot of ire at Nintendo over t...

Our favorite portable SSD is up to 33 percent off right now

Nothing has enough storage these days. Whether it's a Mac or a PS5, it feels like everyone I know spends far too much time deleting things on their devices to clear up space. That annoyance is what makes SSDs so appealing, especially the Crucial X9 Pro.  We find the Crucial X9 Pro to be the best portable SSD for most people and, right now, the 1TB model is down to $70 from $101. The 31 percent discount brings this device to only $10 more than its all-time low price. If you need even more storage...

Metro is a series baked in atmosphere. Whether it's the dank tunnels under the city of Moscow or the snowy landscapes of Russia itself, the simple act of exploring is the reward. I adore what 4A Games did to bring Dmitry Glukhovsky's novels to life, and can't wait to see what's next. In the meantime, however, Metro Exodus co-developer Reburn (formerly 4A Games Ukraine) finally has a launch date for its new game, La Quimera. Best of all, you can play it ahead of time.

One of the biggest surprises from the recent Switch 2 Direct is that the accompanying Pro Controller will actually come with two new back buttons labelled 'GL' and 'GR'. In addition to a slightly revamped design in which Nintendo took inspiration from the GameCube controller, the new Pro Controller is also seemingly taking a few cues from the likes of the Xbox Elite Controller and PlayStation Dualsense Edge, both of which sport their own customisable back 'paddles...

Promise Mascot Agency is a delight for - and assault on - the senses. It scratches unknown itches and brings your mind to sneezing point. It's loud and bright and chaotic, packed with collectibles and missions, and you'll spend a good chunk of time traversing its cursed Japanese town in a rickety old pickup van at breakneck speed, glancing at road signs and careening down cliffs, only to be righted again as though nothing had happened once you hit the bottom.
