Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship Of Doom (NES)

Hyaaah! Hello chums, and welcome back to another edition of Box Art Brawl! Last time, we looked at Pokémon Trading Card Game for the Game Boy Color, and the result was pretty definitive. The Western design won with 69% of the vote, with some of you noting that the Japanese variant didn't even look like it belonged to the Pokémon franchise. User Kienda said "If someone showed me the Japanese case out of context, I wouldn’t even twig it was a Pokémon game". Yep, fair comment!

India's games industry is waiting for its Black Myth: Wukong moment, its developers tell us how it can happen

China's video game industry has had some huge, global hits in the past few years with games like Black Myth: Wukong and Genshin Impact. But we have yet to see equivalent success from games made in India - which has a similarly-sized population of around 1.4 billion people, along with the fifth largest economy on the planet. In fact, it's rare to see an Indian game become a big hit outside the country's own borders.

Vicious and smart, one of PC’s best hidden-gem FPS games is cheaper than ever

Vicious and smart, one of PC’s best hidden-gem FPS games is cheaper than ever

In Doom Eternal, you have to sprint, leap, and pirouette to stay alive and get the drop on the hellspawn. In Half-Life and Half-Life 2, it’s all about keeping your HEV suit charged and, especially during the many platforming and physics-based puzzle sections, watching your step and proceeding with extreme caution. In most FPS games, you have to be either precise and skillful or slow and careful. Robocop Rogue City is the total opposite. You’re a machine. You’re a tank. Grab a 12 gauge, march rig...

Apple Introduced Its Most Controversial MacBook 10 Years Ago Today

Apple announced the infamous 12-inch Retina MacBook a decade ago today, an experimental new Mac that was as controversial as it was revolutionary. Apple unveiled the 12-inch MacBook on March 9, 2015, at the "Spring Forward" event in San Francisco, California. The event was primarily focused on the Apple Watch, which was being fully detailed ahead of its launch the following month, so the debut of the brand-new MacBook line took many by surprise. Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced the new MacBook as a...

You can now play Donkey Kong ‘94 through Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo added an absolute gem to its Switch Online library of classic titles this week: the 1994 Game Boy game, Donkey Kong. The beloved game arrives alongside the 1995 puzzle game, Mario’s Picross. Both are available now for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, right in time for Mario Day (March 10). Donkey Kong built upon the arcade game that came before it, and features roughly 100 stages. The story should feel pretty familiar even to those who don’t have a nostalgic connection to it — Donkey...

Pokémon Almost Became A "Gritty" Baseball-Themed RPG In The West

"Could we make it that they’re all baseball players in a baseball league?". Gail Tilden, former Nintendo of America’s marketing boss, recently spoke to The Video Game History Foundation's Frank Cifaldi at the Long Island Retro Gaming Expo, and one of the topics she touched upon was the small matter of launching Pokémon in the West. As you'll probably be aware, Pokémon—or Pocket Monsters, as it's known in Japan—was already something of a phenomenon in its homeland before it reached North America ...

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 revisited: improved but key problems remain

Released in late 2023, Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Volume 1 was a promising but ultimately frustrating, buggy, and visually lacklustre effort from Konami. However, the good news is that improvements have been made, with version 2.0 taking aim at several key issues on console and PC. It's a relief to see, because it's a project worth salvaging - being an all-in-one package containing seven core games in the series, with some beautifully presented extras. Today, I'm focusing on the Metal Ge...

The coolest game developer ever put to film appears in a very unexpected movie

Polygon icon 10 days, 9 hours, 3 minutes ago by Oli Welsh

Game developers get pretty short shrift on screen, mostly by not being represented at all. Filmmakers generally love to make movies about driven, uncompromising artists just like themselves, but for some reason — probably either snobbery, fear, or lack of understanding — they don’t often choose people who make video games as subjects. On the...

Roguelike ARPG Ravenswatch proved one of my favorite surprises of 2024. I hadn’t followed it too closely during early access, but was immediately captivated when I jumped in ahead of the full launch in September. Structured like a more open-world spin on Hades and with nine Diablo-style classes inspired by all manner of classic fairy tales and legends, it’s great fun solo or in co-op. But if you’re someone who loves playing with a friend, Passtech Games has just revealed the perfect new DLC - an...

Snag zombie slaying hit Dead Island 2 cheap right now

If videogames have one universal truth, it’s that bashing zombies in the head never gets old. Whether cleaving with the fireaxe in Left 4 Dead 2, sliding into the undead and unleashing combos with a makeshift shiv in Dying Light, or hitting infected in the dome with brown sugar in Dead Rising, there’s just something about taking out these sub-human beings. One of the best to ever do it is Dead Island 2 - a sequel a decade in the making - and you can snag the game cheap right now.

Grim survival game The Forever Winter overhauls weapons and water in new update

Of all the new survival games that arrived in 2024, grimdark looter shooter The Forever Winter has a particularly captivating premise. In its wasteland ruled by the hulking mechs of warring megacorporations, you’re but a tiny figure scrabbling through the dust. Every inch of space or ounce of water you can scrounge might prove the difference between life and death. Fun Dog Studios has nailed the tone - but so far, it’s felt very distinctly early in the cooking process. Now, however, one of the t...
