Reddit client Narwhal tries $4 monthly pricing to navigate API changes

Third-party iOS Reddit app Narwhal introduced a $4-per-month subscription plan that will take effect in the next week or two. The developer announced the plans Tuesday on Reddit (via The Verge). The pricing is designed to allow the developer to cover Reddit’s widely disparaged API fee hikes, which led to mass online protests earlier this year and the shutdown of the beloved client Apollo. The app’s developer, who uses the handle u/det0ur on Reddit, wrote that the pricing was “definitely an exper...

Hyenas developers share frustration at how Sega's biggest budget "metaphorical turd" was mishandled

A number of developers behind the now-cancelled Hyenas have commented on the project's failure, and shared some of their frustrations towards management at both Creative Assembly and Sega. Last week, YouTuber Volound issued a well-sourced report on Hyenas' downfall, including the detail that it had been Sega's "biggest budget game ever". That report stated Hyenas had been plagued with a lack of direction before it was ultimately canned. Now, a further video by Volound has shared further quotes o...

Bobby Kotick thinks videogames could use Elon Musk's brain tech, according to reports

Once you've finished screaming, let me re-emphasise that this story is one of those "according to report" stories. It comes from unnamed sources at Activision-Blizzard, describing a recent all-hands meeting during which CEO Bobby Kotick laid out his vision for the company and gaming at large following Activison's acquisition by Microsoft, which is tipped to finally conclude this week. Amongst other things, Kotick allegedly discussed machine learning, Guitar Hero and the apocalyptic power of Micr...

Here's what NASA brought back from the asteroid Bennu

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft brought back samples from the asteroid Bennu and, in a livestream earlier today, NASA scientists showed us what it found hanging out in the great vastness of the cosmos. Simply put, the agency brought back a fairly large sample collection of various-sized rocks, dust particles and intermediate-sized particles.  The big news here is that samples from the 4.5-billion-year-old asteroid contain not only carbon, which is to be expected, but also water. These are the build...

Splice Create uses AI to find samples that work with any loop that catches your ear

Earlier this year Splice launched a new mobile app called CoSo that used AI to build what it calls "Stacks" collections of samples that are supposed to work well together. Slowly but surely elements of that app have made their way to Splice proper under the banner of Create. But it was always just a complete roll of the dice. You picked a style and Splice spit out four loops. You can swap out individual samples if you don't like them. But that's about the extent of your ability to curate.  The l...

Paradox declares pulp strategy The Lamplighters League a $22m flop

Paradox Interactive has called its recent The Lamplighters League a "big disappointment" from a commercial perspective, admitting - just seven days after its release - the pulp strategy game is unlikely to recoup its development costs, resulting in a $22.7m USD write-down. The Lamplighters League, which was developed by the Paradox-owned Harebrained Schemes, blends tactical turn-based action real-time stealth in a globe-trotting adventure inspired by the classic pulp stories of the 1930s, giving...

Nintendo has shared a new promo for upcoming release Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and it is really quite charming. The short video in question shows Bowser trying his best to woo Princess Peach with a single flower. She looks at him with a certain amount of scepticism, before both are distracted by the bouncy arrival of one of Super Mario Bros. Wonder's elephant power-ups. Red Dead Redemption 2 could have gone on forever. Like GTA 5, which has enjoyed a lifespan of more than ten years thanks to Grand Theft Auto Online, the world of RDR 2 is so rich, so full, that we could have been a hootin’ and a hollerin’ with new material and DLC for years. Fallout 4’s iconic power armor just got a lot more immersive

Looking back at it, Fallout 4 holds up incredibly well. Bethesda’s most recent take on the post-apocalyptic RPG series came out a whopping eight years ago, but I still find that the broad changes to power armor, that attempt to turn it into a truly hulking mass of metal and power, work well. Now, a new mod revises power armor, and makes it more immersive than it’s ever been.
